Tick Prevention

In the interests of avoiding tick transmission in dogs, and given the risks of tick borne disease, application of a preventic tick collar is now mandatory for the peak boarding periods of june, july, august, december and january and is highly reccommended for the rest of the year.

Amitraz or deltamethrin containing collars which affect the tick prior to attachment, afford a better standard of control than spot on chemicals, such as fipronil/frontline which rely on the tick feeding on the host to exert their effect.

Combining both is even more effective along with other adjuncts such as a good tick shampoo and premise spray.

The aforementioned collars have proven to be the best single prophylactic measure which is why they are reccommended/mandatory for dogs. We have yet to see a cat with a tick so routinely require the application of frontline to boarding felines upon admission as the prophylactic of choice for non-tick ectoparasites of concern.
